Back to the Grind

So, I have officially started my first semester of my Junior Year of Art school. Above are a few of my doodles made during the repetitive lecture of the Syllabus during week one. Despite it being the first.. ah err second week of school now I have a butt load of homework. Welcome back procrastination how have you been?

The second assignment of the semester:
3 Hour In-Class Assignment in Visual Vocabulary
Ink Wash, Microns, and Markers on 18x24 Drawing Paper
Prompt: Contemporary Culture Portrait
Subject:Captain America
I realize that Captain America isn’t really a result of true contemporary culture. He was made first and foremost as “a consciously political creation” in the tension right before the break out of World War II. Joe Simon and Jack Kirby (the original creators) “morally repulsed” by Nazi Germany were Pro-War and created Captain America as their “poster boy” -or in this case “comic boy.” The first issue of Captain America went on sale a full year before the bombing of Pearl Harbor.  However, a year into the War the comic featuredCaptain America punching Adolf Hitler in the jaw and sold nearly one million copies.
It’s not difficult to take from his initial introduction that Captain America was easily used as a popular patriotic figure, that people could stand behind. He became one of the major icons from the era that brought our country together, and reminded us of the fight that was happening over seas. I don’t believe that the recent reintroduction of Captain America into Popular Culture is a coincidence.  Yes, he is just one in a series of heroes that have been brought back into the spot light to create the Avengers. However, we have been tied up in a very unpopular war for a while now. The reintroduction of Captain America could very well be a subtle reminder of how unified a country we used to be in previous wars. While I don’t necessarily agree with the current state of affairs with our soldiers in the Middle East, I do believe we sometimes take it out on the wrong people. There are people who blame not only the government but also our soldiers
Our Soldiers are just following orders, clearly there are always exceptions, but in general they don’t have any say in where they get sent or what they are ordered to do. A bunch of them join the service wanting to pay debts, pay forcollege or just plain fight for our country the old fashioned way. So, when people disrespect our soldiers or see one in the airport (or wherever) and don’t stop and thank them for their service I get a little peeved.
Anyway, this became a longer rant than I meant it to be. Long story short, this is my portrayal of Contemporary Culture’s Captain America. He still has his helmet, but it’s blue kevlar, and his uniform is the standard ACU issued to almost all soldiers. I wanted to make a parallel between the classic Patriotic Icon and our modern day soldiers.
